Carhartt WIP Melbourne - A Gallery Inspired Retail Space in Chinatown.
A gallery space meets retail, in a fusion showcasing local materials and youth culture.
Bold New Presence in Melbourne’s Eclectic Chinatown.
Carhartt WIP marks its continuing expansion in Australia with the launch of its second store in Melbourne's eclectic Chinatown district. This split-level space blends Carhartt’s industrial workwear roots with localised references and a nod to contemporary youth culture.
Iconic Branding Meets Urban Playfulness.
The store's façade features a double-height window that showcases a 3-Dimensional 'C' logo. Created with advanced CAD techniques, this inflated, high-gloss 'C' in the brand’s signature yellow not only captivates passersby but also initiates a playful visual conversation with the urban streetscape.
Street Art, Industrial Materials, and Ambient Warmth.
Inside, the store's design embodies the elevated utilitarian elegance synonymous with Carhartt WIP. Walls are adorned with a curated selection of urban art, echoing Melbourne’s renowned street art, fusing the local artistic vernacular with the brand’s identity. The strategic lighting design enhances the industrial materials used, radiating a welcoming warmth while mirroring Chinatown's dynamic energy.
A Lower Level Inspired by Gallery Architecture and Local Stone.
Descending to the lower sales floor, visitors are greeted by an ambiance reminiscent of an art gallery, thanks to the high ceilings and the stark concrete floors and ceilings. The product display, a blend of suspended and floor-mounted rails, is accentuated by imposing I-beam structures fashioned from native Australian green Pilbara marble.
Material Transitions and Sonic Signatures.
The spatial dynamics are carefully considered to change the pace through the shop floor space. Altered by a lower ceiling towards the rear, plywood-clad ceiling trays inject warmth and rhythmic texture into the space. Bespoke Carhartt loudspeakers are discreetly placed, their tweeter horns share the same high-gloss yellow finish as the giant ‘C’.
Street-Level Detail Rooted in Local Texture.
Inspired by the textures of the local cobbled streets, the black brick cash desk seamlessly blends into a low-level plinth. Serving dual purposes for product presentation and a small seating area, it encourages visitors to stay a while and engage with the Carhartt WIP family..
