Carhartt WIP’s latest retail destination marks its first boutique in Melbourne’s QV shopping district — a cultural and commercial precinct known for its architectural contrast and laneway energy. The store’s compact footprint called for a highly functional, flexible interior — one that could carry the brand’s workwear legacy while responding to the local context with clarity and intent.
Designed with Local Integrity
Material selection played a defining role in shaping the space. Working closely with Melbourne-based contractors and fabricators, the project team sourced native Australian materials to reduce the store’s carbon footprint while enhancing its sense of place. Ironbark timber and Pilbara marble — both native to Australia — feature prominently across custom mid-floor furniture, the cash desk, and the accessory zone. These rich, earthy tones lend warmth and tactility, anchoring the store in its surroundings.
Industrial Precision Meets Adaptability
A refined industrial palette underpins the store’s structural elements. Perimeter rails and fixtures feature a zinc passivate finish, offering a cool, reactive contrast to the warmth of the natural stone and timber. Custom metalwork includes heavy-gauge folded tables and a new square-profile hanging system — a progression from the round scaffolding typically used in Carhartt WIP stores. Every detail was engineered for long-term adaptability, supporting new product formats, seasonal rotation, and evolving retail behaviours.
Colour, Graphic Layering & Brand Expression
The brand’s script logo takes a prominent position on one wall, finished in tonal greens and yellows that echo the colour shifts in the zinc-treated metal. Below, blocks of graphic colour are introduced through deep pile rugs, anchoring the mid-floor displays and softening the visual rhythm of the space. These details speak to the brand’s evolving urban identity — rooted in workwear, redefined for a new audience.
